The increase in solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) that reaches the Earth’s surface should make us reflect on the need to develop new approaches in protecting the skin from UVR exposure. Bionap researchers have reflected on a global approach to aging and photoprotection that  is of primary importance to maintain skin health. The use of dietary supplements with both antiaging and photoprotective efficacy has increased in recent years : eating well could be the best way to defend our skin. This is the new awareness of the role of nutrition in skin health and specific dietary components have emerged as an effective alternative strategy to prevent and alleviate the symptoms of photoaging.

The intake of 100 mg/day of the standardized Red Orange Complex™ extract containing anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavanones, and ascorbic acid is effective in counteracting both the harmful effects of uvr exposure and aging signs. The product improves the skin reaction to UV exposure by decreasing the trans-epidermal water loss, the erythema, and the intensity of melanin staining inside dark spots.

The total skin antioxidant capacity of the stratum corneum as well as the UVA-induced lipid peroxidation decreases.

Moreover, the product increases skin moisturization, elasticity, and radiance, together with the improvement of skin resilience and wrinkle depth. The activity on skin elasticity parameters indirectly demonstrated the effect on the extracellular matrix components, and in particular on both collagen and elastic fibers. This positive effect could be also related to the key role of ascorbic acid in collagen biosynthesis and as a collagen structure stabilizer.
